Onyx Coating’s Vunyx Cut Bets on One Precut Stack for Tint and PPF

The launch

Onyx Coating announced Vunyx Cut, positioned as an all-in-one precut software platform for paint protection film and window film—one pattern library, nesting/optimization features, and compatibility claims across major cutters (Graphtec, Zünd, Roland, Summa, and others).

The pitch is familiar and still valuable: less scrap, faster setup, more consistent cuts across techs, monthly pattern updates for new vehicles.

Why this matters for operators

Multi-service shops already run two mental OS’s—tint patterns and PPF patterns, often on different software. Every switch costs training time and creates “that one tech who knows the other system.”

A unified stack is attractive if:

  • you already sell both categories heavily,
  • you’re opening a second bay / location,
  • or scrap rate is quietly eating margin.

Treat vendor claims as testable, not gospel. “Up to 30% waste reduction” only counts if your nesting discipline and film widths match the demo.

Pressure-test checklist before you commit

  1. Pattern coverage for your real fleet mix (trucks, Cybertruck geometry, Euro luxury, EV glass).
  2. Cutter drivers for the machine you already own—migration cost kills ROI.
  3. Edit workflow for custom pieces (mirrors, light bars, aftermarket spoilers).
  4. Offline / license behavior when the shop internet dies mid-day.
  5. Export/import if you ever need to leave the ecosystem.

Bottom line

Vunyx Cut is another signal that film brands want to own workflow, not only rolls. Shops that evaluate software like they evaluate film—on scrap, cycle time, and training load—will make better calls than shops chasing the newest logo.
